What is the Northeastern Nevada Virtual Academy?

Northeastern Nevada Virtual Academy is a free online public school created by the Elko County School District. We provide educational services to students in Elko County who choose to receive some or all of their K–12 education at home.

Who provides the curriculum for the Northeastern Nevada Virtual Academy?

ECSD teachers provide instruction for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. For grades six through twelve, we’ve partnered with Edgenuity. All NNVA curriculum meets Nevada State Academic Standards. The Nevada Department of Education approves all the courses we offer.

Can students take courses online and regular courses at their attendance area school?

Yes. Middle school and high school students can take courses online and at their attendance area school. Parents can arrange hybrid learning by contacting the counselors and administrators at their child’s attendance area school. Kindergarten through fifth grade students must choose between full time online enrollment and full time enrollment at their attendance area school.

Can students who are enrolled in online courses participate in extracurricular activities?

Yes. Please contact an administrator at your attendance area school for more information.

How many courses is my child required to take?

All students, except seniors, must be enrolled in six courses. Seniors must take at least four courses. We require that seniors take additional courses if graduation requirements cannot be met through the completion of four courses each semester.

Full time enrollment for seventh through twelfth grade students can be completely online or a combination of online courses, regular courses at your attendance area school, or credit recovery courses. Tenth through twelfth grade students can also use dual credit college courses to complete a full time schedule with approval from the principal at their attendance area high school.

Are students required to participate in state-mandated testing?

Yes. We will notify you regarding the dates and times of the tests. Testing will take place at designated locations or at one of the schools in the Elko County School District. We provide official testing proctors for high stakes tests such as End of Course, ACT, and SBAC.

Where do students take their midterm and final exams for online courses?

Some exams require a proctor. Students must take these exams at the designated locations. We notify parents and students well in advance of the test location, time, and date(s).

Does my child have to enroll in the Elko County School District to enroll in the Northeastern Nevada Virtual Academy?

Yes. The funding for NNVA is based on the funding Elko County School District receives for full time student enrollments.

What documents do I need to register my child with the Elko County School District?

We require the following to register your child:
  • A copy of your child’s legal birth certificate
  • Immunization records
  • Proof of residency
  • A completed registration form
  • Signed written agreement and plan-of-study

What if my child does not complete their online courses or fails their courses?

The administrators at your attendance area school will schedule a meeting with you and your child to determine if your child should enroll in regular courses at their attendance area school or remain in online classes. Students who are not making progress should, in most cases, return to regular courses at their attendance area school.

Can credit earned through Northeastern Nevada Virtual Academy be used to change a grade received in a previously taken course?

No. We will display all courses taken by a student on their transcript, and we will use these courses to calculate their GPA.

Can my child graduate from high school if they complete their courses through the Northeastern Nevada Virtual Academy?

Yes. Once your child meets Elko County School District's graduation requirements, they will receive a diploma. We issue diplomas in June of each year. We will also provide your child with a transcript, upon request, that displays the courses completed, grades for each course, GPA, state exams completed, and date of graduation.

What are the Northeastern Nevada Virtual Academy attendance policies?

Parents should check their child’s progress in the following areas each week:

  1. Log in to your courses at least five days each week.
  2. Communicate with the teacher in each of your courses at least once a week.
  3. Complete assignments in each course each week.
  4. Complete course work at a pace that will allow you to finish your courses within the allotted time period.
